Fascia and Nerve Pain/Numbness

PAIN

Pain is the most common reason to go to the doctor. The number one reason for missed work days or sick days is musculoskeletal pain, for example, back pain, neck pain, headache, migraines, hip pain and foot pain.

What type of pain do you have?

Three types of pain are neuropathic, central and nociceptive.

1. Neuropathic – Actual Nerve Damage – results from dysfunction of peripheral or central nervous system instead of stimulation of pain ( sensory) receptors.  Neuropathic pain can be caused by nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, alcoholism, toxins, parasites or viruses

Symptoms include burning and tingling. The pain felt is out of proportion to the tissue injury. What is causing this type of pain?
It could be the increased collagen production in fascia caused by prolonged sitting, standing driving, flying staying in any position for long periods of time, anything over 30 minutes, fibers are already forming and reforming to adapt to this new position which, leads to thickening of fascia tissue increasing restriction or a vice-like grip around nerves and muscles.

Brain Pain

Imaging

Ultrasound shows fascial fibers attached to nerves. Possible causes, viruses, diabetes, post surgeries where nerves have been bruised or damaged. Nerve compression can be caused by Herniated discs (A herniated disc can be caused by fascia tension on the vertebrae compressing the discs,) tumors and neuromas.

Treatments Recommended

1. Fascial rehabilitation therapy can separate those fibrous connections to release the vice-like grip on the nerves. Massage can often irritate the nerve and not recommended.
2. Hydrodissection is an excellent treatment. Nerve hydrodissection is a technique used to separate the nerve from surrounding tissue, fascia or structures involve anesthetic or solution such as saline, done under ultrasound
3. Prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections supports healing in the surrounding tissues to reduce arthritis and inflammation.

2.  Central Pain – According to the National Institute of Health NIH  Central pain is a neurological condition caused by dysfunction or damage to the brain, brain stem, or spinal cord, the central nervous system.

What Causes it?

Central pain can be caused by stroke, MS (multiple sclerosis), tumors for example. This type of pain is generally constant often made worse by touch, movement, emotional and temperature changes. Burning is the typical symptom.

This pain usually presents after damage or injury and may be delayed by months or years.

 Treatments

1.Reduce stress with breath work and medication
2.Medication
3.Fascial Release with Brain work, lymphatic and cranial therapy

3. Nociceptive Pain –  results from activity in neural pathways that are secondary to the actual tissue that is injured or growing. The pain can be sharp achy or throbbing.

It can be caused by tumors or cancers that are growing larger causing crowding or congestion in other body parts near the cancer site.

Treatments

1.  Reduce Inflammation
2. Create space in tissues and nerves – micro fascial stretching
3. Lymphatic Therapy – with medical approval
