Brain Injury hard to understand

Brain injury is difficult to understand hen the symptoms are so subtle and creep up on you unexpectedly and without warning. The inability to focus, read, understand and comprehend, fatigue and loss of energy, the inability to suffer fools and have patience for almost any tedious task is nonexistent.  “I want my brain back, I want my energy back” is a common complaint. Mixing up words is not only embarrassing it is frustrating.  Angry outburst, doctors are at a loss of what to do and how to treat. Rest alone is not enough to heal a brain.

Concussion is a brain injury

I was working with a concussion victim who said I don’t have a concussion I have a brain injury. They are the same thing. Concussion has become a household word that lacks the urgency that Brain injury demands.  The definition of a brain injury is simple; Inflammation and damage to brain tissue. It can be caused by a bump, a jolt, or a piercing or invasive blow resulting in a change in normal functioning, speech, memory, motor skills and personality.

Leading causes of Traumatic Brain Injury are from falls according to the research gathered by the CDC. Between 2006 and 2010 falls accounted for 40.5 percent of all brain injuries. Children between the ages of 0 and 14 falls account for 55 percent of all head injuries in children. 81 percent of all head injuries are caused by falling in people over 65.  In my experience falling can be resolved with brain exercises.  Engage your brain daily with balancing exercises.  Can you stand on one foot for 10 seconds or more?  Start now and build up and exercise – do it daily.

The second most common causes of head injury is being struck. I have treated two people who were hit directly on the top of their head by their garage door compressing the spine as well as causing a serious head injury. Motor vehicle accidents are in third cause of head injury with 14.3%. In my practice 70 percent of my patients have been in a car accident and were told it was only minor. In reality the only thing that can determine if it is minor is your body or cranium says different. 10.7percent of head injury is from assaults, this could be in boxing, kickboxing, fighting of any sort.  19 percent is unknown, people can t remember what happened or possibly are too embarrassed or ashamed to report.

I had the opportunity to work with my current head injury client for over two years before the most severe and recent head injury.  She shared with me that she had been diagnosed with ADHD as a child and had suffered several head injuries from sports and had also suffered through a stressful divorce.  She had created tools to survive but not thrive with daily activities. The latest head injury was the most severe.  I could observe firsthand the changes in her brain that accumulated from the prior injuries. The changes in her behaviour are noticeable and significant. Unable to drive, to focus, to make appointments, to remember, she is no longer as cheerful and is often aggressive and demeaning.  I have noticed she is compartmentalizing her activities and thoughts, almost becoming detached from her life.  I referred her to neurobiofeedback right away, even attending 4 times a week now for two weeks, her brain will take months and maybe years of treatment and support to heal.
